In Ethiopia, thousands of Jews are living in deplorable conditions as they await emigration to Israel. Until then, Federation partners are providing critical educational and welfare services. In Israel, 8,000 Ethiopian Jews live in absorption centers and some stay 24 months or longer. These centers are at capacity. Continued funding will help ensure that bringing the remaining Ethiopian Jews home doesn’t cause a strain on the centers.
With 70% currently living below the poverty line, 50% of men currently unemployed, and the high school drop-out rate at 25%, Federation support will help ensure that the Ethiopian Jewry do not become a permanent underclass. |
