These days test our ability to thrive and survive. They test our families, our relationships and our character. They test our community. What kind of People are we in a crisis such as this? Our tradition instructs us that even while we take care of our own urgent needs and those of our immediate family, our responsibilities extend to all who are devastated by the economic crisis. There are members of our community who now are losing their jobs, and their homes. Who are hungry. Who have no health insurance. Jews in Israel and over 50 other countries are seeing their Jewish communal services disappear. And yet in the midst of this crisis, we must also follow the ongoing imperative to continue building. Sustaining Jewish education. Partnering with Israel. Developing a new generation and its leaders. Reaching out to communities in Los Angeles beyond our own. What kind of People are we? A generous People who care and act. Because a bad economy demands a good community.
