Every year, The Jewish Federation of Greater Los Angeles’ prestigious Brawerman Fellowship identifies a select cohort of graduating high school seniors who have shown commitment to leadership, academics, community service, and Jewish life. In addition to receiving a significant college scholarship, these students participate in various retreats, a trip to Israel, and other overseas opportunities. Each of these elements is designed to help students develop their Jewish identities, leadership skills, and overall personal awareness. I’m writing to you today from Israel — with some personal reflections. This has been a momentous week as Israel celebrated the 50th anniversary of the Six Day War and the reunification of Jerusalem. Fifty years ago this week, as I was looking forward to my 10th birthday, I saw my grandfather with tears in his eyes. He told me the story of Israel as if he witnessed every moment.
