I asked - you answered.

I want to thank the large number of you who responded to my last e-mail and took time to answer my questions. Your openness, passion and willingness to continue the conversation reflect the same deep concerns we see throughout our diverse Jewish community and address every day.

These are challenging times. Several of you asked about Federation’s work in our broader community. Our Community Engagement (CE) strategic initiative is committed to bring positive change to our city through diverse partnerships and broad coalitions. Led by a group of dynamic and committed lay leaders, it focuses on economic realities plaguing Los Angeles, including housing and homelessness.

As part of our commitment to addressing L.A.’s homelessness epidemic, on August 24th, we are hosting another public forum focusing on homelessness with the immediate goal of education and dialogue. We are bringing together key civic and community leaders, policy makers and elected officials to address this critical issue. In addition to what I am sure will be a spirited discussion, attendees will tour the St. Joseph Center in Venice, an organization on the front-line in meeting the needs of this most vulnerable population. You will be receiving an e-vite to attend the event shortly.

Throughout the year, hundreds of concerned Angelenos of all ages give back, during our Community Service Days. At locations throughout greater Los Angeles, we partner with organizations including the Hollywood Community Housing Corporation, PATH (People Assisting the Homeless), the Union Rescue Mission, Covenant House, Food Forward and SOVA, to name a few. We invite you to participate on Sunday, August 6th.

As Jews, we understand that ensuring our Jewish future includes actively caring about the future of our neighbors and our city. The work we do together makes tikkun olam a reality — not just an ideal.

Thank you for all you do,

Jay Sanderson
