Immediately following the devastating cyclone that hit Myanmar,
The Jewish Federation of Greater Los Angeles established a special
Emergency Relief Fund, and advanced $10,000 to the fund to help
respond to emergency requests. We have already collected substantial
funds, and have expanded the fund to benefit victims of the terrible
destruction from the earthquake in China.
“As a Jewish community, we feel it is our mandate to help
those in need, particularly in such a time of terrible crisis,” said
Federation President John Fishel.
The Federation is distributing one hundred percent of the money
collected in the emergency fund. Pledges to the fund are being
sent to the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee and
other organizations that are working with Israel and U.S.-based
agencies on the ground in the affected areas to see that funds
are disbursed to those in need. We’ve received reports
that these agencies have, in fact, been inside Myanmar and have
already been able to provide services.
We will continue to accept pledges to the Emergency Relief Fund.
