Knishes & Compassion Documentary Honors SOVA’s Founder’s
90th Birthday and the 25th Anniversary of the Food Pantry
Recently, television reporter and producer Leron
Kornreich released her documentary, Knishes & Compassion, a film
that celebrates the 25th anniversary of SOVA and the 90th birthday
of Zucky Altman, who founded the food pantry along with her husband,
Hy.
In the documentary, Kornreich, an alum of the Federation’s
L.A. Couples program, delves into the life and legacy of the Altmans,
one of the most celebrated philanthropic couples in Los Angeles'
Jewish community. It also uncovers many previously unknown gems about
two Los Angeles institutions, Zucky's delicatessen and SOVA food
pantry. Through research and interviews, Kornreich unveils the history
behind the deli, which has been designated a landmark by the city
of Santa Monica, and the intimate connection between Zucky's and
the creation of SOVA.
"It's incredibly rewarding to interview fascinating
people and learn the history behind landmark institutions," says
Kornreich. "I
am thrilled to share this documentary online so that all interested
Los Angelinos will be just a mouse click away from learning about
their favorite deli of yesteryear, as well as the generosity of
spirit that led to the founding of SOVA."
SOVA is a non-sectarian program of Jewish Family
Service of Los Angeles, one of The Jewish Federation’s beneficiary agencies. SOVA (which
means “eat and be satisfied” in Hebrew) is dedicated
to alleviating hunger and poverty in the community through food distribution
and offering a wide range of supportive services. SOVA operates three
neighborhood Food Pantry and Resource Center sites in greater Los
Angeles – in the Beverly-Fairfax area, in the Pico-Robertson
neighborhood, and in Van Nuys.
