Mentoring: A 2012 Resolution We Can Get Behind!
Earlier this week, The White House released President Obama's proclamation marking January 2012 as National Mentoring Month. In Obama's words, this month will serve to "celebrate the contributions of all those who cultivate a supportive environment for the next generation, and we recommit to expanding mentorship opportunities across our country."

This year, why not make a resolution to become a mentor, if you have not already? Engaging in mentorship will enrich both your life and the life of your mentee. In Obama's words, "At school and at home, in the library and on the field, mentors lift our youth toward their goals and ambitions."
Becoming a reading mentor was one of the most gratifying things I did in 2011. One moment in particular drove home how much being a reading partner had come to mean to me. At the end of the winter semester, I gave a book to my 1st grader as a holiday gift. This rambunctious boy told me with earnestness that this was "the best day ever." He melted my heart. I was so glad to realize that the time we spent together was so special to him as well.
