Volunteers We’re Talkin’ To: Lilia Arbona
Lilia, a KOREH L.A. volunteer at Carthay Center Elementary, holds a special place in our hearts since she is a fellow employee here at The Jewish Federation. We're so excited to share her volunteering insights with our readers this week!
How long have you been volunteering with KOREH L.A?
I have been volunteering with KOREH L.A. for 4 years at Carthay Center Elementary School.
What is one piece of advice you think would be most useful for a new volunteer?
My advice for a new volunteer would be first and foremost to just show up! Be consistent and positive in your sessions. Have patience - instead of saying "no" or "wrong" say "let's try again" and work together to figure it out.
What is one challenge you were confronted with when volunteering, and how did you solve it?
It's always challenging to keep their attention. I engage them by allowing them to pick the book and we'll study it together before we even open it. I ask them what they think it's about and what's happening in the picture. [It's] like solving a mystery - with all the clues inside. I set them up to figure out the story and share in their excitement when they do.
What is the funniest or cutest thing a child said or did in the past school year?
The sweetest thing my reading partner ever said to me was that she wanted me to come more often. My heart melted. I am always impressed by the drawings and poetry my kids create. I encourage them to express themselves that way.
What books are the most popular with the student(s) you work with?
I find kids thrive when they discover an author they like for example the Horrible Harry series or Dr. Seuss books. They delight in the mischievous antics and silliness.
If you could change one thing about your volunteer experience, what would it be?
If I could change one thing about my volunteer experience, it would it be to get a little more feedback from teachers about the students. I do feel appreciated and well greeted by the school staff. I am frustrated by the library closure and hope our schools get the funding they need. Until then, I am here to help. Thank you KOREH LA for making a difference!
Lastly, what were your favorite books growing up and what children's books do you love today?
Grew up with, and still love, "Where the Wild Things Are," "Harold and the Purple Crayon," and "The Giving Tree."
Lilia, those are some of our favorite books as well! Thank you for all of your dedication to KOREH L.A. Volunteers make our world go round!
