It is with great honor that I assume the chair of KOREH L.A. This very exciting position offers me an opportunity to undertake four specific challenges.
First, I am pleased to continue the fine work of my predecessors, Deborah Kattler Kupetz and Mark Slavkin. It is through their extraordinary efforts that this vibrant program continues. Without their commitment, energy and foresight, KOREH L.A. would not be where it is today, having served over 14,000 children in 100 LAUSD schools with over 6,500 volunteers.
Second, I am thrilled to have the opportunity to work with all of the KOREH L.A. partners who ensure that this broad-based attack on improving literacy is a successful one. Without the help of Toyota Motor Sales, U.S.A., Verizon, The Angell Foundation, the Compassion Fund, the S. Mark Taper Foundation and the Kayne Foundation, this program could not exist at the level that it does.
Third, the opportunity to participate in the mission of KOREH L.A. is both exciting and challenging. Addressing literacy is a cornerstone of advancing our community and providing an opportunity for all to participate in what it has to offer. But KOREH L.A. is not just about literacy. It is about a commitment from each of us to let others know that we are all in this together. We all sink or swim together. Without each of us sharing and helping within our own community we will never be as strong as we can be.
Finally, my challenge and hope is that during my tenure as chair of KOREH L.A. I will be able to focus a significant amount of my energies toward that sometimes awkward but important task of fundraising. My goal is to undertake steps that will ensure that KOREH L.A. has a foundation to continue to operate now and in the future, not only in functioning at its current level but increasing both the number of readers and volunteers throughout our city school system. If I could add that to what has been accomplished by my predecessors and the current volunteers, I will consider my tenure a success.
I look forward to meeting and working with all of the volunteers, corporate partners and readers in continuing and enhancing this very special program.
Thank you for the opportunity to do this.
