KOREH L.A. Volunteer Voices

By Sara Aftergood,
Charnock Road Elementary School

It all started seven years ago at Charnock Road School with one adorable first grader named Pablo. Over the years, I have increased my commitment to five students at a time and have been adopted by several classrooms – that is, by their teachers and fellow students. It is hard to believe, after all of my years at Charnock and with all of my different grade levels, that, come this September, I will once again not have graduated, but will find myself back there, beginning all over with a new crop of adorable readers.

I increased my participation every time a teacher implored, “this little girl needs you.” I come on to the lunch playground, and other children who have not been tagged as needing my one-on-one help get a chance to read for me. I’ve had the good fortune to meet most of my students’ parents at school assemblies or back to school night. They are always very grateful to me. It is a pleasure to know them over time and watch their families grow.

I have watched many students develop into strong, capable readers. My weekly sessions with them always include the L.A. Times, school assignments, as well as my own children’s favorite books and/or suggestions from the beloved library aid, Diane Callahan. I have met so many wonderful children and staff and have found a delightful home at Charnock Road. I suspect I get more out of the experience than the students do – but don’t tell anyone!
