Book Suggestion

Many volunteers have expressed interest in books that portray children from disadvantaged socioeconomic backgrounds in a positive light.

Something Beautiful, by Sharon Dennis Wyeth, is a story about a little girl who lives in an impoverished neighborhood where homelessness, hunger, destruction, graffiti and crime are prevalent. When her teacher writes the word beautiful on the blackboard, the girl decides to look for something beautiful in her neighborhood. As she goes on this treasure hunt, she finds plenty of things to appreciate about her neighborhood. This book presents an optimistic depiction of the community she lives in.
