KOREH L.A. Volunteer Voices

By Kay Weissman, Fair Avenue Elementary School

In all my experience as a performer, first dancing with the Jose Greco Dance Company and then as an actress for many years, I never had as much fulfillment as working with my little friend, Rosa. I came into the program through the University of Judaism as "something to do" with my time as I am now a grandmother and working less as an actress. Little did I know how Rosa would wrap herself around my heart. Through KOREH L.A. I learned some basic skills that were easy to adapt to my own experience and began the process of helping Rosa with her reading. She is a First Grader having trouble reading English since her family only speaks Spanish at home. Little by little she has been making progress and our theme song is "NEVER GIVE UP". Every time she comes to a difficult word I see her whisper the words, never give up. This phrase has helped me as well as I try to accomplish new things in life and when I think of Rosa's struggle I can apply it to myself. By writing little books to her family and then her teacher I have been able to find out more about what she thinks without prying. She has a wonderful mother who has given me a beautiful little plant that I cherish and recently a book in Spanish called "Cuentos de Abuelitas", meaning stories from grandmas. She wanted me to have something to show her gratitude but I will forever be grateful to Rosa and her family for bringing me great joy just seeing her grow. She is my friend and I hope that I can follow her progress until she graduates.

Rosa worked with Kay to write two beautiful books that Kay bound for her, My School and My Family. Click here to read My School.
