Looking Forward: Beyond the Crisis. (BOR) (Board of Rabbis)

An Update on the Current Situation with Gaza and A Focus on Religious Pluralism within Israel

WHAT: Temple Emanuel to host community forum regarding the current events in Israel and to share various perspectives about religious pluralism in Israel, featuring Consul General David Siegel and prominent Los Angeles rabbis

WHEN: Monday, November 26 at 7:00 - 9:00 P.M.

WHERE: Temple Emanuel of Beverly Hills, 300 N. Clark Drive, Beverly Hills, CA 90211

WHO: Consul General David Siegel
Rabbi Judith HaLevy, President of the Board of Rabbis of Southern California
Rabbi Laura Geller, Senior Rabbi of Temple Emanuel of Beverly Hills
Rabbi Nicole Guzik, Director of the Sinai Temple Israel Center
Rabbi Yosef Kanefsky, B'nai David-Judea

WHY: It is important at this time of crisis with Gaza that Americans connected to Israel continue to be engaged with the important work of celebrating Israels democratic traditions and think creatively about the challenges Israel faces from within.

This public forum was planned in response to the October 16 arrest of Anat Hoffman at Jerusalems Western Wall for disturbing the peace, as a result of her leading a prayer service and for singing the Shema holy prayer out loud. This incident has raised concerns and confusion in many Diaspora Jewish communities (Jews who reside outside of Israel), and led to calls from organizations and leaders of the American Jewish Community to change the policy that prevents women from participating as a group in public prayer at the Western Wall.

Consul General Siegel will open the evening with introductory remarks about the broader picture of the security challenges Israel is facing from Gaza and then focus on the issue of religious pluralism within Israel.

He will be joined by several of Los Angeless leading rabbis. The discussion will be moderated by Rob Eshman, Publisher and Editor-in-Chief of Tribe Media Corp/Jewish Journal. Shep Rosenman, Co-Founder of LimmudLA, will also participate.
