Jewtina y Co.’s Latin-Jewish Film Festival presents: Novia Que Te Vea (Like a Bride): A Documentary Film by Ruth Behar

As part of The Latin-Jewish Film Festival, join a screening of “Novia Que Te Vea” (Like a Bride). The 1994 Mexican film follows two young Jewish women in Mexico City during the 1960s as they navigate their cultural identities and personal aspirations. A Q&A with the film’s director, Costa Rican-Jewish filmmaker Guita Shyfter, will follow.

JAHM Weekly Movie Screenings

The performance is a musical journey through Hollywood’s first Golden Age, when many Jewish immigrants, including artists, fled persecution in Europe and came to Los Angeles in the 1930s and 1940s. They helped transform Hollywood into the entertainment capital of the world and a beacon of opportunity, influencing timeless films including Casablanca, Gone with the Wind, and King Kong.

Short Film Screening and Conversation: Catalogue of Noses

A short musical comedy inspired by real events, ‘Catalogue of Noses’ tells the story of Emily, a Jewish teen actor, on the day of her scheduled nose surgery, who faces off with her mother, a plastic surgeon, and the weight of her cultural identity. Immersed in a Sea of Light: Yiddish Essays, Short Stories and Poems Set in Los Angeles

Rabbi Zachary Golden and Rabbi Henry Hollander will present selections from Yiddish essays, short stories and poems set in Los Angeles for Jewish American Heritage Month. Rabbi Hollander will introduce and Rabbi Golden will perform texts in the original Yiddish and English translation.

A Mizrahi film on the last days of the Baghdad Jewish community of the 1950s, as told through the story of a 16-year-old Jewish boy.

Persona Non Grata – May 27

Highlighting both JAHM and AAPI Heritage Month, Persona Non Grata tells the story of a Japanese diplomat who goes against orders and issues over 6,000 visas to Jewish refugees at the outbreak of World War II.

Adio Kerida – May 31

Join us for an evening with Ruth Behar, presented with Jewtina y Co and Nuroots, featuring a screening of her documentary Adio Kerida about Cuba’s Sephardic Jewish community and her family’s exile. A conversation and book signing with Ruth will follow.

From the Wizard of Oz to Wicked: Jewish Composers Who Shaped Hollywood

Presented By: Los Angeles City Coucil

City Hall will spotlight Jewish composers whose music shaped Hollywood and created some of the most iconic moments in American Cinema. The celebration begins at 10:00AM with a live musical performance in Council, followed by a reception on the Forecourt at 11:30AM with the UCLA Klezmer Ensamble and food. The public is also invited to view the monthlong exhibition “From the Wizard of Oz to Wicked: Jewish Composers Who Shaped Hollywood,” at City Hall’s Bridge Gallery.

Schoenberg In Hollywood: West Coast Premiere

Jewtina y Co.’s Latin-Jewish Film Festival presents: ‘Adio Kerida’ Film Screening and Conversation with Author and Director Ruth Behar

As part of The Latin-Jewish Film Festival, join a screening of “Adio Kerida” (Goodbye Dear Love). The films follows director and author Ruth Behar as she returns to her native Cuba to explore the island’s remaining Sephardic Jewish community and chronicle her family’s journey to the U.S. The screening will be followed by a conversation and book signing with Ruth.
