Celebrate Hanukkah Safely and Joyfully

The recent events at Bondi Beach have touched all of us. We mourn the senseless loss of life that has left our entire Jewish community shaken. At JFEDLA, our focus — especially during a season meant for light and joy — is on caring for Jewish Los Angeles and looking out for one another.

Jewish professionals, law enforcement, and community leaders are working closely to support safety at synagogues, schools, and public gatherings across our city. Alongside those efforts, we want to share eight common-sense tips you can keep in mind as you celebrate Hanukkah.

  • Stay present. When you are in busy places, make sure to take in your surroundings. If something truly seems off, trust your instincts and let local authorities or CSI know.
  • Stay connected. Bring your phone, keep it charged, and turn on location sharing if you use it. It makes staying in sync much easier. Make sure emergency contacts are current and easy to reach on your phone. Let someone you trust know where you’ll be and when you expect to be home.
  • Go together. There’s strength (and more fun) in numbers. Travel with friends or family when possible.
  • Keep it lit. Park and walk in well-lit areas whenever you can. Avoid lingering on busy sidewalks that are open to traffic; step into protected areas when gathering.
  • Pick a meet-up spot. When heading to crowded places (like The Grove), choose a rally point for your party in case anyone gets separated.
  • Notice the helpers. It’s always good to know where security and/or law enforcement are, just for peace of mind.
  • Pack light, think ahead. A small essentials bag — phone charger, ID, meds — can be handy for any unexpected change of plans.
  • Celebrate the moment. Hanukkah is about celebrating the freedom to be a Jew. Don’t forget that!

May your Hanukkah be filled with light, warmth, and moments worth celebrating.
