Federation Impact Update — August 2025

In August, we put the values of teaching children, inclusivity, and joy in action by hosting an enlightening college orientation event, advancing vital research that helps us better understand our community, and engaging hundreds of our Valley community members in a fun-filled Shabbat celebration.

PREPARING JEWISH STUDENTS FOR CAMPUS LIFE

For a second consecutive year, we hosted our Rising Freshmen College Orientation to empower Jewish students and their parents as they prepare for a seamless college transition. Jewish leaders, campus professionals, college students, and alumni shared insights and tips, which will help students build confidence and create connections. Keynote speakers Dr. Saba Soomekh and artist/author Kimberly Brooks offered teens thoughtful guidance and practical advice. Every participant walked away with the book 10 Things Every Jew Should Know Before They Go to College and a copy of our 2025 Campus Toolkit. These resources will help students thrive both Jewishly and socially on campus.

UNDERSTANDING JEWISH L.A. THROUGH GROUNDBREAKING RESEARCH

As one of the only Jewish organizations in Los Angeles with the reach and capacity to lead large-scale research, we recently released two follow-up reports to our landmark Study of Jewish L.A., focusing on LGBTQIA+ Jews and Parenting When Jewish and Something Else. Deep and data-driven, these reports are already helping to shape more inclusive policies, programs, and community spaces. This vital work is a meaningful step to strengthening our diverse community, so that more people feel welcomed and included.

EXPERIENCING SHABBAT SURROUNDED BY OUR JOYFUL COMMUNITY

At Shabbat in the Park in West Hills, we organized and supported a celebration marked by Jewish joy that brought over 500 people together across generations. The incredible turnout was an inspiring testament to the strength of our Jewish community and the love we have for our Jewish heritage. Co-hosted with synagogues and partners from across the Valley, this evening was filled with music, laughter, and community. The night included an interdenominational prayer service; messages of support from federal, state, and local elected leaders; and a candle lighting ceremony that made Judaism feel welcoming for people of all ages.
