We are excited to announce the newest Los Angeles members of the National Young Leadership Cabinet (NYLC), the premier leadership and philanthropic program within the Jewish Federations of North America and throughout the Jewish world. Over the course of this five-year program, participants from all different backgrounds and cities come together at leadership retreats and conferences. They meet spiritual and philanthropic leaders, find inspiration, and make meaningful connections that help them on their journey to become stronger, more effective leaders. Congratulations to Marlyse Scherr and Josh Fein, active members of our Los Angeles Jewish Federation community. Read why they are passionate about the community and joining NYLC!
Meet Marlyse Scherr
Why did you want to join NYLC?
Meeting new people and making meaningful connections is my joy. Being Jewish is defined differently by everyone. The Jewish Federation of Greater Los Angeles encourages everyone to define it for themselves and builds the community around those needs. This is what makes our community so unique. Because the Federation’s doors are open to all Jews, we are able to share what The Jewish Federation does with everyone. I want to be a part of the National Young Leadership Cabinet so I can expand and support our community. The conversation around bringing the young uninvolved Jews into the fold is a huge opportunity. They are my favorite people to speak with because we can help them create their Jewish story. The traditional Federation model of the past generations is changing, and I am passionate about reshaping young adults’ views of how the Federation works. I want to show them the magic! It is an honor for me to share our Federation’s successes with the Cabinet. I have been given so many wonderful opportunities with our local Federation, and I believe that in order to further my involvement, I need to spread my wings and learn from other young leaders around the U.S. so I may continue to grow as a local leader.
Tell us about yourself:
I was born in Basel, Switzerland and raised in St. Louis, Missouri by two wonderfully supportive parents. Encouraged to find my own way, I left home for sunny California at age 18, attended the University of San Diego, graduating Magna Cum Laude, and moved to Los Angeles.
During my early 20s, I fell in love with the city of Los Angeles and built a foundation of wonderful friends, but was missing a connection to the Jewish community. My sister Morgana Mauney and I went on a Birthright LA Way trip in July of 2012. To say it was life changing is an understatement. At LAX, I met a charming and hilarious gentleman named Adam Scherr — and it was love at first sight. Coming back to the states, I became an active member at The Jewish Federation of Greater Los Angeles, organizing events and attending Jewish experiences around the city. I became part of the Young Adult Board and currently sit as the Co-Chair for YALA. Adam and I married on October 2, 2016. Today, I am a luxury real estate specialist at Coldwell Banker Beverly Hills, a very happy wife, and dog mom to Bella and Lola.

Why did you want to join NYLC?
By joining the NYL Cabinet, I hope to meet and engage with likeminded young leaders who have a passion for Judaism and philanthropy. I believe joining NYLC presents an incredible opportunity to spend time with young leaders from several different Federations and for members to intelligently discuss and debate challenges and opportunities facing the Jewish community. I look forward to having these thoughtful discussions and bringing them to a local level in Los Angeles. Through connecting with other smart young Federation leaders, I hope to find out about the productive efforts at their chapters and will look to bring back tried and true ideas to help benefit our L.A. Jewish community. Hopefully the other Cabinet members will benefit by learning from me about what we’re doing on a local level as well, thereby strengthening the Federation and Jewish community nationally. One day I aspire to hold a senior level leadership position at the Federation and, through participation in Cabinet, I anticipate learning the skills necessary to help further my journey as a leader. I hope that my participation will enable me to make a significant positive impact on the Jewish community now and for many years to come.
Tell us about yourself:
I am a 32-year-old financial executive living in Los Angeles. Growing up in a Jewish home to parents who have been married for over 35 years — one Sephardic and one Ashkenazi — I learned the importance of family, loyalty, and Jewish tradition. This dynamic also helped me discover early on that there are various ways people practice Judaism. In kindergarten, my parents gave me a tzedakah box and taught me the importance of giving to those in need. This sparked an interest in finance and philanthropy, which has manifested in both my personal and professional life. I donated a portion of my bar mitzvah money to charity and continue to give and be involved in philanthropic activities to this day.
I founded and served as CEO of a national financial consulting firm after graduating from college and am a Partner with AdvicePeriod, where I lead their nationwide expansion. My wife Lauren and I recently celebrated our one-year wedding anniversary and are continuing the important Jewish traditions at home. I hope to eventually expand my family eventually and look forward to passing down these traditions and teaching the importance of giving back to future generations.
