Statement on Wednesday’s Tragic Events in Jerusalem

I am writing you from Israel, where I am here with Federation lay leaders and supporters on a Solidarity Mission.

On behalf of our Los Angeles Jewish community, we join with our brothers and sisters across the Jewish world in mourning the tragic loss of 3-month-old Chaya Zissel Braun.

Chaya was killed Wednesday in Jerusalem when a car driven by a Palestinian terrorist plowed into a crowd of people. She had just returned from visiting the Western Wall for the first time with her parents, Los Angeles native and Jerusalem resident Shmuli Braun and his wife Chanie.

We express our deepest condolences to their family, including the baby’s grandparents, Los Angeles residents Moshe and Esther Braun. May Chaya’s memory forever be a blessing.

This tragedy occurs at a time when we are here to support those who have already endured so much—and now this. It is simply heartbreaking.

We condemn this terrorist act that also injured eight other people, including Shmuli Braun.

Our heartfelt thoughts and prayers are with Israel during this sorrowful time.
