JCRC Annual Legislators Mission to Israel
December 2005

From December 4-14, 2005, eight members of the California State Legislature participated in the JCRC's annual Legislators' Mission to Israel. Sen. Joe Simitian (D-Palo Alto), Sen. George Runner (R-Lancaster), Assemblymember Carol Liu (D- La Ca–ada Flintridge), Assemblymember Todd Spitzer (R-Orange), Assemblymember Fran Pavley (D-Agoura Hills), Assemblymember Joe Nation (D-San Rafael), Assemblymember Sharon Runner (R-Lancaster), and Assemblymember John Benoit (R-Riverside).

Once in Israel, the Los Angeles JCRC delegation was joined by a group from the San Francisco JCRC. Highlights from the trip included a 45-minute meeting with former Prime Minister Shimon Peres at his offices in Tel Aviv; a visit to a moshav adjacent to the Gaza Strip where the delegation heard first-hand about safety and security issues from a longtime farmer in the area; a visit to the Knesset that included meetings with members of Prime Minister Ariel Sharon's new Kadima party and representatives from the Ministry of Immigrant Absorption; and visits to the Western Wall, the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem, and the Church of the Beatitudes on the Sea of Galilee.

Throughout the mission, the legislators expressed the impact the trip was having on their perceptions of Israel and the Jewish people, their knowledge of the Federation, and their understanding of issues of concern to the Jewish community, ranging from ethnicity, to providing social services, to the importance of study abroad programs in Israel for California's public universities.

The JCRC has continued working with these legislators for their assistance in reinstating the University of California's study abroad programs in Israel. The JCRC has also worked with Assemblymember Carol Liu (D-La Canada) to find innovative ways to bring about sensible reform to regulations affecting conservators - court-supervised guardians who manage the financial affairs and day-to-day needs of the elderly who are otherwise incapacitated. While some difficulties have arisen with private, for-profit conservators, Jewish Family Service is among the nonprofits that provide responsible conservatorship services to clients throughout the Los Angeles area. In working with Assemblymember Liu and other key members of the State Legislature on this issue, JCRC will help to ensure that Jewish Family Service will continue to be able to provide the highest quality of service and care to its clients.
